Body of missing swimmer washes ashore in Myrtle Beach area

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – The body of a missing swimmer washed ashore in the area of Myrtle Beach State Park early Friday morning, according to Horry County Coroner Robert Edge. Crews responded to the beach at the state park around 4:30 a.m.

Edge said the body was that of a swimmer reported missing in the ocean around 6 p.m. on Tuesday.

People in the area of the Crown Reef Resort around 29th Avenue South in Myrtle Beach reported the swimmer went below the surface of the water and never came up. The Coast Guard used a boat and a helicopter in the search, which continued in the area near Springmaid Beach. The swimmer was not found during the search.

Edge identified the victim as James Ross, 33, of Rockhill. Edge said it appears Ross died from drowning but an autopsy is planned for today at Grand Strand to confirm cause of death.
