Officials at Stop & Shop supermarkets are investigating how a black widow spider got into a package of grapes sold from their Branford store.

On Monday, a Branford women found a black widow in her organic white grapes and proceeded to warn the public on Facebook.

“I just found a Black Widow Spider in my organic grapes! I just bought them at The Branford Stop & Shop this morning and wanted everyone to be on the look out!”

The Branford Stop & Shop is located on 22 Leetes Island Rd. News 8 spoke to store officials, who said they were aware of the situation.

On Tuesday afternoon, Stop & Shop issued the following statement:

“The safety of our customers and associates is very important to us [Stop & Shop]. Stop & Shop and our grape growers take necessary measures to keep spiders out of the grapes that are sold. Despite that effort, it is possible for a spider to get into the bunches as they are a part of the natural, organic environment. We invite all customers who find their produce to not be of quality to come into the store for a refund or exchange.”

Stop & Shop has offered the woman a full refund for her produce.
