MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – The controversial civil rights group “Black Lives Matter” announced via Facebook that it would be holding a protest rally in Myrtle Beach this weekend.
According to the page, the rally will be held Saturday at Plyler Park located at 1100 North Ocean Boulevard near the Ferris Wheel beginning at 7 p.m.
The group posted the following message on the page.
Aren’t you really fed up? Stand with people who look like you, stand with people who don’t look like you but feel as strongly about this as you do! Don’t just stand for a day either, don’t just be friendly for a day. Pay attention to the attempt at the reversal of our lives. They can’t kill us all, and we gotta stop killing each other. What does one have to do with the other you ask? We teach people how to treat us so…. Now we’re teaching them that we’re done!!! Black Lives Matter is an ideological and political intervention in a world where Black lives are systematically and intentionally targeted for demise. It is an affirmation of Black folks’ contributions to this society, our humanity, and our resilience in the face of deadly oppression.
Jeremy Howard saw the event on Facebook and plans to attend.
“It’s going to take everybody, it’s not just black communities. It’ll take everybody to come together as one and stand for what’s right. That’s the law. Why go by the law if its not going to help both parties, both races,” said Howard.
Myrtle Beach Police Lt. Joey Crosby told News13 that the department was aware of the planned protest rally.
“As a citizen of this great nation you are afforded the right of freedom of assembly or peaceful protest so we encourage those to come to the protest to come peacefully and you’re afforded that right. We’ll make sure that we have resources there to afford you that right as well,” Crosby said.
Howard said he hopes many people come to the rally tomorrow and stressed the importance of keeping it peaceful.
“We could be a city that’s not involved. Yet we’ve got so much to say. So if you’ve got so much to say, you might as well come out, come together as one with a peaceful protest,” said Howard. “This is nothing against the police or nothing. It’s love. That’s all it’s about. It’s about love at the end of the day and that’s going to conquer everything.”
