MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – Some bikers plan a protest against Myrtle Beach after they call the 23-mile traffic loop a nightmare for the last two years.

Some want to move the festival to another part of the Grand Strand and have no bikers spend money inside Myrtle Beach.

A Go Fund Me page was posted this week telling bikers to “bankrupt Myrtle Beach”  in protest of the 23-mile traffic loop during Memorial Day weekend Bikefest.

The page has been shared thousands of times on social media, with many claiming the traffic loop and additional police presence discriminates against the bikers.

The city’s spokesperson, Mark Kruea, says that’s not the case.

“All are designed for the safety of everybody who’s here in time, It’s not designed to protect or discriminate against one group of people or another,” said Kruea.

The Go Fund Me page is part of a campaign to move the event to the North Myrtle Beach, Cherry Grove area, and it asks bikers to not spend “a single dime” in Myrtle Beach City limits.

Basil’s Pizza in Cherry Grove says Memorial Day weekend is already one of their busiest weekends of the year, but if bikers want to move their way, they say they wouldn’t mind the extra business.

“Any business is good business,” said owner Harry Pieri.

North Myrtle Beach city spokesperson Pat Dowling says that week, they simply don’t have the room.

“We don’t have very much more to go before we have a full house,” said Dowling.

Dowling says North Myrtle Beach has far less hotel space than Myrtle Beach, and picking up an entire event and moving it to their city isn’t feasibly possible.

So far, no plans have been made to change the way Bikefest is handled in Myrtle Beach because city leaders say right now, the plan works.

“With the violence and the traffic wrecks and the fatalities that have occurred with this event, safety is the number one concern, and so far, the traffic loop is working in terms of safety,” said Kruea.

The creator of the Go Fund Me page says he hopes to raise 30K to campaign for the boycott, host events in North Myrtle Beach next year, and to build a hotel booking engine to help bikers avoid hotels in Myrtle Beach.

At the time of this article, the page had only reached $45.
