In Augusta there’s no if’s, and’s or but’s about it. This is a historic bridge. Were you aware of that?
“I am, absolutely. That’s a beautiful bridge,” said Millie Huff
Clearly the Butt Memorial Bridge meets all the criteria as being historical, but people seemed to really be aware of it’s name.
“Ever laugh at the name Butt?”
“Absolutely. Who doesn’t,” said Jennifer Delaney.
“Don’t make fun of the Butt.”
“That sounds like the bad end of a joke,” said Tyrone Bush.
Well this wasn’t a joke back when it was built in ’31. Today it’s known as the Fifth Street Bridge but it was originally The Jefferson Davis Memorial Bridge.
“No, I didn’t know that,” said Gerald Cooper.
And when you’re driving across the Jeff Davis/5th Street bridge, there is one thing you really need to be aware of and that’s right here…whoa.
“You know when you’re there don’t you,” said Gerald.
Hard to miss the big bridge hump.
“I can’t really go over the bridge because I scratch my under carriage every time I do it,” said Millie.
“It will tear your car up for sure,” said Jennifer.
Here’s something you should be aware of: there’s talk of closing the Fifth Street bridge to traffic. So here at historic bridge awareness month, this bridge bump may soon be history
“It seems that way to me,” said former Mayor Deke Copenhaver.
