MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – A few weeks ago, the Myrtle Beach Police Department challenged the kids with the Summer Teen Basketball League to a community basketball game. Today the two groups came together for the friendly competition.

Myrtle Beach Police Officers say there has been so much disconnect in our country between police departments and the communities they serve, and the MBPD wants to make sure that doesn’t happen in our area.

“We’re trying to get the community and the police back together,” said Officer Michael McMahon. “It’s not us against them. We need them, they need us and we want to work together.’

However, this game at the Mary C. Canty Recreation Center was the one time it would police versus the teens. Players on the summer league, called the Canal Street Ballers, said it was a cool moment to meet the police officers and play against them.

“I haven’t played against most of them, but Officer McMahon talks a lot so I want to see what he’s got today,” said Lebrone Woodbury before the game. When asked who was the better team, Woodbury laughed and said he predicted the Canal Street Ballers would beat the MPBD Ballers by 20 points.

In the end, the Canal Street Ballers beat the Myrtle Beach Ballers 32-27. The MBPD says they hope this will be the first of many games with community leagues.
