SUMTER, SC (WBTW) – One man was arrested Friday for unlawful neglect of a child or helpless person after a 3-year-old was taken to the hospital and treated for second and third-degree burns.
The warrant says on July 25, Steve Johnson, who was the babysitter’s boyfriend, used a “shower wand with scalding water coming out at the child’s buttocks and leg areas.”
Ken Bell of the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office says the man got mad because the child defecated in his pants and in the shower.
The report states that the child was screaming through the incident and the boy was taken to Palmetto Health Tuomey before being taken to the Augusta Burn Center for treatment of second and third degree burns.
Bell says Johnson will face a fine at the discretion of the court and could spent up to 10 years in prison.
