AYNOR, S.C. (WBTW) – A benefit run will happen at the end of this month for an Aynor High School cross country student. She had a stroke over the summer and her recovery has been expensive.
Ashley Torres says the saying that “you never know what you have until it’s gone” isn’t true. She says you never know what you have, until you lose it.
“When it first happened I thought I was paralyzed. I was like oh my gosh I won’t be able to move again.”
Two and a half months ago, Ashley went running.
“I was perfectly fine, I finished the run, I stretched, just my left arm gave out kind of, it was just weird, and then when I got home, it went down from there. I couldn’t feel anything.
Ashley suffered a spinal stroke and a cerebral stroke at just sixteen years old.
“Anything can happen to anyone. I was perfectly healthy.”
Since June 6th, things haven’t been perfect but they are getting better. Ashley’s mom said she’s watched her daughter start from scratch.
“It’s like her being a baby again. Step by step, every day, watching her do different progress.”
Progress is moving a hand again.
“When you can’t move them for a certain amount of time and then you’re actually moving it again you’re like oh my gosh it’s coming back.”
Being with her sister again. Progress is having a totally different mindset.
“I don’t take things for granted. I’m really happy about everything.”
There will be a dash for ash fundraiser for Ashley on august 27th. It’ll be at the Morris Manor fields in Aynor. Entry is $25 per person.
