ATLANTIC BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) – Law enforcement has worked on a safety plan for the past 11 months after three people were shot and killed and others wounded in the City of Myrtle Beach.

For Atlantic Beach Police Chief, Tim Taylor, that plan includes monitoring gang activity. Since it’s Taylor’s first Bikefest as chief, he will rely a lot on the things he learned during a recent visit to Daytona Beach Bike Week as help.

“Some of the things I learned from Daytona as the gangs come into town here, they take officers and they shadow them gangs to make sure to see what they’re doing and the whole purpose their and that’s something I’m going to do in Atlantic Beach. As I see the gangs come in, I recognize who they are. I’ll put an officer to shadow them while they’re here in Atlantic Beach,” Taylor said.

Chief Taylor has also assembled a command team to assist him with identifying gang activity during the weekend.

“I’ll have Lake City Police Chief here Joseph Cooper also Estill Police Chief, Keith Parks. They’re very good officers, they’re very sharp at what they do and they got a very good knowledge of gangs. They’re a part of the gang association here in South Carolina. Also I’m a part of that also. We know what we’re looking for,” Taylor said.

And there are very specific things officers will look for as they track gangs.

“I mean different sets, different things, different bandanas, that they’re wearing. I mean it’s just so much that you could look for to identify them as gangs, tattoos and stuff like that is what I’m looking for as they come in to monitor them,” Taylor added.

That monitoring will include officers following gangs as the crowd comes in this weekend. For those who attend the event every year, it’s not something they’re really worried about.

“That’s not a concern of ours because we don’t live that type of life you know. We’re family oriented we’re about just you know having fun and that’s what we came here for, nobody’s looking for trouble,” Nick Owens said.

But, Chief Taylor says those who are looking for trouble will find themselves in one place behind bars.

“The ones that come here and cause the problems, I can guarantee you they’re going to leave here on probation if they’re not from the state of South Carolina if they’re not from here.”
