HARTSVILLE, SC (WBTW) – South Carolina Highway Patrol has made an arrest in a fatal hit-and-run accident that claimed the life of a bicyclist in late March.

Cpl. Sonny Collins says highway patrolmen responded to the crash on East Carolina Avenue, near Rolling Road, around 7 p.m. March 21 where a bicyclist had been hit and the driver of the car fled the scene.

Crime Stoppers identified the victim as a 52-year-old Hartsville man. The group says the victim, Andy Kilpatrick, was “the father of a young daughter, an avid cyclist, passionate duck hunter and friend to all who knew him.”

A Society Hill man has been arrested in connection with the crash. Cpl. Collins says troopers arrested Melvin Curtis Robinson, 64, of Society Hill and charged the man with leaving the scene of a collision involving death. Robinson is currently booked into the Darlington County Detention Center where no bond has been set, according to online booking records.

Crime Stoppers offered a cash reward of up to $25,000, with $5,000 for information leading to an arrest and an additional $20,000 if the information leads to a conviction in the fatal hit-and-run.
