CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) – The Navy will test new lightweight exercise torpedoes off the South Carolina coast during the coming days.
The Naval Undersea Warfare Center in Newport, Rhode Island, announced that the testing begins on Thursday and will continue through next Tuesday.
Tests will be conducted in an area between 50 and 75 miles off the coast and the test torpedoes will be will launched from Navy anti-submarine aircraft operating from the Naval Air Station in Jacksonville, Florida.
Most of the expended torpedoes will be recovered by a helicopter and taken to the Sunny Point Military Ocean Terminal near Southport, North Carolina.
A surface vessel and an airplane will patrol the exercise area making sure no marine mammals are in the area during testing.
