KILL DEVIL HILLS, N.C. (AP) – The federal government has added another meeting to gather comment from North Carolinians on the possibility of opening tracts off the coast to oil and gas exploration.
The meeting Monday at the Ramada Inn in Kill Devil Hills on the Outer Banks is to let people comment on the Obama administration announcement this year that tracts could be opened to exploration later this decade.
The federal Bureau of Ocean Energy Management is seeking direction on what to include in environmental studies. Last month, about 400 people attended a similar meeting in Wrightsville Beach near Wilmington.
Some politicians say exploration will boost coastal economies. Opponents worry spills could damage thriving coastal tourism.
