Authorities now say that armed thieves who held up a “luxury” jewelry store in downtown Charleston managed to make off with $1 million in jewelry.
The incident happened around 11:23 a.m. Wednesday at Demetre Jewelers at 253 King Street, which describes itself as a “nationally known luxury jewelry store.”
According to police, two black males wearing masks, one armed with a handgun and one armed with a hammer, robbed the business. The hammer was used to smash a show case and they stole several watches.
The incident happened just 3 days after a truck carrying gold was robbed at gunpoint along I-95 in NC with $4.8 million worth of gold taken.
A police report made available Thursday says a list of the items taken from Demetre Jewelers includes 11 Rolex watches worth $10,000 each and $500,000 worth of merchandise that hasn’t yet been inventoried.
One suspect is described as 6’0″-6’2″ large build, the other as 5’8″ thin build.
One suspect had a hammer and the other had a firearm. One of the suspects ordered the employee to lay on the ground while the other broke the case and stole an unknown amount of jewelry.
The suspect vehicle at this time is a green two-tone Pontiac Montana, which fled south on King Street and turned west on Beaufain Street. No tags appeared to be attached to the vehicle.
