Almost 100 new homes may be coming to Carolina Forest

New homes could be coming to a busy part of the Carolina Forest area. 

On Thursday, the Horry County Planning and Zoning Commission reviewed a proposal to build 99 homes on approximately 12 acres off the intersection of River Oaks Drive and Village Center Boulevard.

People who live in the area said more people, means more cars, and possibly more accidents. 

“The growth is just going crazy, and along with that the traffic is extreme,” said Charles Schuster.

He lives directly across from the intersection of River Oaks Drive and Village Center Boulevard. Schuester’s worried if the development is built, traffic will not only become more congested, but more dangerous too.

“I’ve already been in a severe accident myself, and we have accidents on the average of once a month,” he said.

Horry County Planning and Zoning director says the 12-acre development alone won’t have a great impact on traffic, but the continuous growth in the area will.

“A project of this size wouldn’t have any serious on traffic but there’s going to be quite a bit of traffic in this area because of the developed properties and because there’s still quite a bit of undeveloped land in the town center,” she said.

According to Carter, the homes will be smaller in size, ranging from 750-1200 square feet. She said smaller homesmay draw a younger, professional crowd to the area.

“People who work there, people who work in retail. It could be younger people certainly, with smaller homes. It’s not likely you would see a lot of families there because of the size of the homes,” Carter said.

With almost 100 homes proposed in the development, Schuster’s not as worried about who’s moving into his neighborhood, but how many.

“I’d hate to see all retirees living here that would kind of take the fun out of it. Everyone’s welcome, it’s just a matter of how dense the population gets,” he said.

Horry County Planning and Zoning Commission will hold a public hearing on the development, Thursday, May 3.
