MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – Myrtle Beach International Airport is helping ease the stress of travelling for autistic children and their families.
The airport worked with The ARC of South Carolina to hold its first ever “Wings for Autism” airport rehearsal on Saturday. Autistic children and their parents got to practice going through an airport, and doing things that could normally be difficult, including getting a boarding pass, going through security, and even boarding a plane. Almost 80 children and their families participated in the event. One of the organizers has two sons with autism and says he’s experienced the benefits of “Wings for Autism” firsthand.
“Travelling with my son, he’s actually a pretty good flier now, but in the past he wasn’t. That’s something that we’ve had to deal with, so this gives him a little bit more opportunity to be a little more relaxed. And it’s a little easier for us when we do go to travel and fly.”
The ARC is a national organization that aims to help people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. It’s held similar rehearsals at airports across the country, but this was the first “Wings for Autism” in Myrtle Beach.
