CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) – Clemson starter Alex Eubanks pitched like a member of the Schmidt family on Sunday, leading the Tigers to a 4-1 victory over South Carolina to win the rivalry series.
The first two games in the hotly contested matchup were dominated by the Schmidt brothers: South Carolina’s Clarke Schmidt had a career high nine strikeouts in the Gamecocks 8-1 victory on Friday, while older brother Clate pitched Clemson to a 5-0 win on Saturday.
This time Eubanks, a freshman right-hander making his first career start, overpowered the Gamecocks (10-2) with eight strikeouts in 7 2/3 innings. Eubanks allowed just one hit and two baserunners over the last 16 batters he faced.
First baseman Andrew Cox had a two-run single to highlight the Tigers offense. Eubanks (2-1) didn’t need much more than that, coming out in the eighth inning to a standing ovation from the record-breaking crowd of 6,524.
