MYRTLE BEACH, SC- When temperatures heat up, certain businesses work overtime to keep people cool.
Kevin Farrell woke up Monday morning, desperate.
“I slept on top of the sheets, then I got up around 12:30 or soaking and wet, sweating,” stated Farrell.
His air conditioning unit failed overnight and he started to panic. Farrell considered sleeping outside, in his pool.
“I’ll put a straw in my mouth and lay in there in case I fall asleep” he said.
Brown and Reaves Air Conditioning and Heating Owner Daniel Brown said summer is their busiest time of year. They respond to 20-40 service calls per day, according to Brown. He knows patience is at a premium when the heat index is 105 degrees.
“Now we can’t always get it in the next 30 minutes, but we usually get there within that same day,” said Brown.
In an emergency, Brown said they’ll respond as quickly as possible. Elderly residents and people with health issues are considered an emergency. Farrell suffers from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease or COPD.
“It’s hard enough when it gets real humid for me to breath,” explained Farrell.
Thankfully, a service technician was able to repair his unit.
Brown provided News 13 with some tips to help keep your AC unit from failing…
– Change filters every 30 days.
– Keep thermostat within 20 degrees of out side temperature, use ceiling fans.
– Clear brush surrounding outside unit, 24 inches of clear space.
– Wash down outside unit with a garden hose.
– Check unit in the spring, heading into summer.
