LELAND, N.C. (AP) – A 68-year-old resident of a Leland assisted living center has been charged in the death of another man after authorities say the two had a dispute involving the pointing of a cane.
Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Emily Flax tells The StarNews of Wilmington that William Almon King has been charged with involuntary manslaughter and assault with a deadly weapon in the killing of 81-year-old James Wescott, a fellow resident of Leland House Assisted Living and Memory Care.
On Saturday, Flax says King told Westcott to stop waving his cane, but Wescott refused. She says King struck Wescott, causing him to fall, hit his head and lose consciousness. Wescott was hospitalized and died from his injuries.
Meridian Health, the facility’s parent company, didn’t immediately return a request for comment.
