MANNING, SC – Deputies in Clarendon County seized over $800,000 in a traffic stop Wednesday afternoon.
CBS affiliate WLTX reports the Sheriff’s Office says a rental car out of New York was traveling under 40 miles per hour in the left lane of Interstate 95 when it was stopped.
Deputies brought in drug sniffing dogs and found a suitcase and a duffel bag full of cash.
The total amount of cash seized was $813,817.
The Sheriff’s Office says it is the largest cash seizure in the history of the department.
Two men were detained in connection to the money, a Cuban national driver and a passenger from Columbia. The two men told investigators that they knew nothing about the bags and said they were there when they rented the car.
The two were later released.
