SPARTANBURG, S.C. – A woman who was armed with a frying pan confronted a man who deputies say broke into her home on Tuesday.
Christopher Wayne Hamrick, 23, is charged with first-degree burglary and first-degree assault/battery by the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office.
A 71-year old woman living in the house says she picked up a frying pan when she confronted the burglar. She says Hamrick threw a stool at her, but missed during the face-to-face confrontation.
Deputies say they were called to Carolina Drive around noon Tuesday by the woman who said Hamrick broke into her home. A relative, armed with a baseball bat, was also there and said he heard the man in the upstairs of the home.
The woman told the deputy the man was still inside the house and that while she had also threatened to shoot him, she didn’t have a gun.
Deputies began to search the area when Hamrick ran out a back door according to the incident report. Deputies say they caught him without incident but he had blood on his hands and jeans.
The investigator believes the suspect suffered a severe cut to his thumb when he broke a glass window to get into the home. The incident report states Hamrick admitted breaking into the house because he thought no one was there at the time.
The suspect says he was homeless and living in a tent. He also admitted to taking some Xanax pills before the reported burglary.
Hamrick was being held Wednesday in the Spartanburg County Detention Center.
