655K Health Care patients’ info exposed, free ID protection offered

GREENVILLE, SC (WSPA) – Bon Secours Health System, Inc. says they are notifying 655,000 patients that R-C Management inadvertently left files containing patient information accessible on the internet when attempting to adjust their network setting from April 18 – 21, 2016.

They say approximately 110,000 were patients in the bordering areas of South Carolina and North Carolina.

They say the information contained in the files may have included patient name, health insurer’s name, health insurance identification number, social security number and limited clinical information.

They say medical records were not included, and Bon Secours has no knowledge that the information contained within the files has been misused in any way.

They say R-C Healthcare Management is a company working for Bon Secours. R-C says they provide reimbursement optimization services to hospital.

Bon Secours says they have no knowledge or indication of fraudulent activity resulting from R-C Healthcare’s oversight, but is making Identity protection, credit monitoring and alert services available to affected patients for one year at no expense to the patient.

They say staff discovered the mistake on June 14, 2016.

R-C says they hired a highly regarded outside forensic investigator after they learned what happened.

They says the investigator confirmed the incident has been fully remediated. They say all R-C customers who might be affected have been notified of the situation and its resolution.

“We take the privacy and security of our patients’ information very seriously and require our vendors to do the same,” commented Richard Statuto, Bon Secours president and CEO. “In addition to notifying all those potentially involved and providing them with identity protection and credit monitoring, we are working with all of our vendors to reinforce our high standards and expectations regarding privacy and security of information.”

Letters sent to affected patients contain complete information for activating the identity protection services Bon Secours is making available at no charge.
