MEBANE, N.C. (AP) – Police say a 65-year-old man has died after being hit by an Amtrak train while crossing the railroad tracks on his daily walk.
Multiple news outlets report 65-year-old Charlie Andrew Johnson died Wednesday afternoon in Mebane after being struck by the Piedmont, a train headed from Charlotte to Raleigh.
Investigators say Johnson regularly crossed the tracks on his daily walk from his home to a local convenience store. They are unsure why he was unable to get out of the path of the train.
An Amtrak spokeswoman says none of the 58 passengers or crew members was injured. The train was delayed three hours during the investigation.
Alamance County Emergency Medical Services say Johnson died at the scene.
