JONESVILLE, SC (AP) — A fourth death has been attributed to a weekend winter storm that brought snow, ice and hazardous conditions to South Carolina.
Lt. Kelley Hughes of the South Carolina Department of Public Safety says a 61-year-old driver ran off Highway 9 just outside Jonesville just before 12:30 p.m. Saturday. Authorities say the vehicle hit a ditch, then a tree.
Hughes says the driver was wearing his seatbelt and later died at a hospital. Local media outlets report the Union County Coroner’s Office has identified the driver as Jimmy B. Thomas.
Authorities say an elderly couple in Greenville died of carbon monoxide poisoning during the massive winter snow storm. A 44-year-old man was walking along the road in Greenville County Saturday when a vehicle hit a frozen area and struck him.
