MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – AARP South Carolina, Veteran’s Welcome Home Center, and the Military Officers Association announced plans Wednesday morning for the third annual Myrtle Beach Stand Down (#MBStanddown) for Friday, September 23, 2016 at the U. S. Army Reserve building on Phillis Drive near Market Commons.

“Stand Down is a one-day community event that focuses on veterans that are homeless or at risk of losing a home,” says Doris Gleason, AARP South Carolina Outreach Director. Individuals will be offered, showers, haircuts, clothing vouchers, breakfast and lunch, new underwear and socks and army surplus goods such as rucksacks, sleeping bags and boots.

More than 30 federal, state, and local organizations will also be available during the day to assist the men and women who have served our country. This includes housing, employment, and legal, medical, dental and vision screenings that could be of assistance.

According to Gleason, 153 individuals were assisted during last year’s event. “We are so appreciative of all the businesses, churches, civic groups, and individuals that not only volunteer their time to help, but also for their donations of food, clothing, and other items.” This year, area Girl Scouts have donated surplus cookies to be distributed.
