32-year-old female inmate at J Reuben Long Detention Center dies of natural causes, coroner says

CONWAY, SC (WBTW) – The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) and the Horry County Sheriff’s Department are investigating the death of a female inmate at the J Reuben Long Detention Center.

According to Horry County Deputy Coroner Darris Fowler, 32-year-old Amanda Peluso died from natural causes at Conway Medical Center Sunday afternoon after being transported from the detention center.

A press release from Deputy Timmy Tyner with the Horry County Sheriff”s Office, around 2:20 p.m., an officer at J Reuben Long Detention Center found the inmate unresponsive in her cell.  The medical personnel on staff initiated CPR and called EMS.

According to J. Reuben’s online booking records, Peluso was booked into the jail at 2:31 a.m. Sunday on charges of shoplifting and disorderly conduct.

The case remains under investigation by SLED, but the preliminary internal investigation revealed no foul play has been detected.
