CARY, N.C. – Saturday was a day of hope for dogs rescued from harsh conditions thousands of miles away around the world.
Just over 30 dogs were driven to Cary on Saturday morning — one of the last legs of their journey from South Korea.
Organizers with Human Society International and a Maryland shelter rescued more than 30 animals who were being raised for food on what’s called a “dog farm.”
“The dog meat trade is just outrageous. These animals live in barren cages. They’re just like the animals in our homes and we’ve got to stop this trade. By bringing them into North Carolina we’re increasing the awareness globally that this has just got to stop,” said Kelly O’Meara with Humane Society International.
The dogs are being taken to several no-kill shelters in North Carolina — where they will be made available for adoption.
Since the program started two years ago, the agency has transported 500 dogs to the United States.
The dogs will then be transported to the following shelters, and will be available for viewing at the dates and times listed:
