BENNETTSVILLE, SC (WBTW) – Officials with the South Carolina Department of Corrections say inmates in a portion of the prison in Bennettsville refused to go back into their cells Tuesday afternoon.

South Carolina Department of Corrections Communications Director Jeff Taillon says personnel with the department responded to an inmate altercation Tuesday afternoon at Evans Correctional Institution, located at 610 SC-9, in Bennettsville. During the altercation three inmates were injured, two were treated onsite and one was transported for outside medical attention.

No employees were assaulted during the altercation, states Taillon, but two employees suffered minor injuries when responding to the incident.

Taillon says all other housing units at the prison were secure during the interruption and there was no threat to the public.

Evans Correctional Institution is now fully secured.
