CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) – Three boaters are safe after the Coast Guard and Charleston County rescue workers responded to reports that their 42-foot boat was taking on water in the Intracoastal Waterway.
The Coast Guard launched a rescue helicopter and a small boat shortly before 2 a.m. Tuesday after receiving reports the boat was aground and taking on water near Capers Island northeast of Charleston.
The boaters reported that an anchor rope broke free pushing their craft into a sandbar where it was swamped.
A shallow bottom boat from Charleston County was able to make it to the scene and take the three boaters off their craft. The boaters reported no injuries but were checked by medical personnel.
