GREENWOOD, S.C. – A 2-year-old boy died from medical complications after suffering from an E. coli infection, according to Greenwood County Coroner Sonny Cox.
The toddler died from kidney failure, Sunday night, at Greenville Memorial Hospital.
Now a nearby school is also on high alert.
According to District Spokesman, Jonathan Graves, parents of students at Springfield Elementary will receive a letter Tuesday. That letter will warn them of a current investigation into another possible E. coli infection within the school.
This alert is also already posted on the district’s website.
Through faculty, we’ve confirmed that the school has already been fully sanitized.
DHEC officials say they’re still trying to figure out what led to the toddler’s deadly infection and ongoing school investigation.
At this time, officials will not say if the two children are connected.
According to the letter to be sent out by DHEC, students will be required to have two negative E. coli tests before returning to the classroom.
