2 charged in 2018 stabbing at Florence Co. boat landing that left one dead, others injured

Two people have been charged in a 2018 stabbing at a Florence County boat landing that left one person dead and others injured.

According to a press release from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, SLED agents have charged two men in connection with the incident.

Vaughn Trey Sumersett, 29, has been charged with one count of murder, four counts of attempted murder, one count of kidnapping, and one count of possession of a weapon during a violent crime.

Blake Allen Cook, 32, was charged with one count of assault and battery in the first degree and one count of assault and battery by mob in the third degree.

Sumersett was booked into the Dillon County Detention Center, where he is being held, the release said. Cooked was booked into the Florence County Detention Center.

The case will be prosecuted by the 12th Circuit Solicitor’s Office.

According to warrants provided by SLED, during an altercation at Bartell’s Landing on June 24, 2018, Sumersett “with malice aforethought, did kill Clint Douglas Poston by stabbing him with a knife.”

Warrants also said Sumersett attempted to kill four other people by stabbing them and tried to kidnap a woman during the incident.

Cook allegedly struck Sumersett in the head with a hammer during a physical altercation in the front of a residence on Bartell’s Landing Road on June 24, warrants also said. Cook also allegedly punched Sumersett in the head area and grabbed him in a chokehold while Poston allegedly punched Sumersett.

Florence County Sheriff Kenney Boone previously said a suspect took a golf cart that was being operated by an off-duty FCSO deputy. The deputy was forced at knife point to drive the suspect from the scene, but was able to escape unharmed a short distance from the scene.
