BOONE, N.C. – Coastal Carolina played 22 innings on Saturday (completing game 1 before playing a doubleheader to complete the weekend series) but had one bad inning in the finale that helped Appalachian State claim an 11-7 victory in the teams’ season finales.

On Saturday, Coastal won the completion of game one, 10-4, as the teams picked up in the middle of the sixth with CCU winning 7-4. Coastal then won game two, 10-5, which started at 1:40 pm. Game three started at 5:41 and ended at 8:52 pm.

The pivotal inning in the final game was the fourth. With CCU up 3-0, App State scored six runs without getting a hit thanks to seven walks, two hit batters and a wild pitch.

Despite the loss, Coastal won its ninth Sun Belt series in 10 tries this season and CCU is 34-6 over its last 40 conference games. The Chanticleers will be the top seed at next week’s Sun Belt Tournament by virtue of winning the regular-season title. Coastal will play at 12:30 pm (CT)/1:30 pm (ET) on Wednesday (May 23) versus the lowest remaining after the play-in game Tuesday (May 22).

Leading the way for Coastal on Saturday was Seth Lancaster. Not only was he 3-for-4 with two RBI, two singles and a double in the finale, over the 22 innings Saturday, the senior was 6-for-9 with eight RBI, five runs scored, two walks, three home runs, two singles and a double.

In the final game Saturday, Coastal jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning. With two outs, Parker Chavers walked and Keaton Weisz singled to put runners on the corners. Garrett Sheppard, getting his first career start and playing his third career game, lined a two-run double down the left field line. After a Cory Wood walk, Lancaster lined an RBI single back up the middle to score Sheppard.

In the fourth, App State scored six runs without getting a hit thanks to seven walks, two hit batters and a wild pitch. ASU loaded the bases as the first three batter walked. After a strikeout, Drew Beck was hit by a pitch to force in a run. After another strikeouts, CJ Brown walked to force in the second run of the inning. Bailey Welch drew the fifth walk of the inning to force in the third run. Alex Leshock was hit by a pitch and the Mountaineers took a 4-3 lead. For the second time in the inning, Conner Leonard walked, forcing in the fifth run. A wild pitch brought home the sixth run of the frame.

The Chants bounced back with a run in the fifth. Lancaster started the inning with a double off the right field fence. Kevin Woodall Jr., followed with a double off the left-center field fence. App starter Will Sprinkle looked to limit the damage, but a two-out error allowed Woodall to score to make it a one-run game, 6-5.

App State went back up two runs, 7-5, in the sixth. Brown hit a leadoff double and scored on a two-out single by Leonard.

The Mountaineers scored four in the seventh to take an 11-5 lead. Joel McDaniel gave App a three-run cushion, 8-5, in the seventh with a solo home run. An error allowed the Mountaineers to tack on another. Beck, who walked, got to second on an error and moved to third on the play. Brown then plated Beck with a sacrifice fly. Leshock cleared the bases with a two-run double for the six-run lead.

Coastal scored two in the eighth to provide the 11-7 final score. Turner Buis walked and moved to third on a Cory Wood double. Lancaster plated Buis with a sacrifice fly to right. Zack Biermann brought home Wood with an RBI groundout.

Anthony Veneziano (5-1) suffered the loss in relief as he allowed five runs on four walks and a hit batter.
