WALLACE, SC (WBTW) – The Marlboro County Sheriff’s Office says a 14-year-old was charged Tuesday for threatening to harm students at Wallace Elementary/ Middle School.
Lt. Trevor Murphy with the Marlboro County Sheriff’s Office says another student overheard statements made by the teen to shoot up the school last week, and reported it to school officials Tuesday.
Tuesday morning around 8:30 a.m., deputies with the sheriff’s office were called to the school to investigate a safety threat.
According to Lt. Murphy, the teen did not have any weapons, but they did find a drawing the 14-year-old did that depicted a school shooting and identified possible victims. The press release states that the student depicted himself as the shooter in the picture.
The student has been detained by the Department of Juvenile Justice and is undergoing a mental health evaluation before being sent to the detention center in Columbia. Lt. Murphy says the 14-year-old has been charged with disturbing schools and threatening the lives of public employees.
Law enforcement was present at Wallace Middle School for extra security Tuesday. The sheriff’s office also said they enhanced their presence at other county schools to give parents peace of mind.
