1,300 playground slides recalled for amputation risk

LEWISBURG, Pa. – A Pennsylvania company has recalled about 1,300 stainless steel playground slides sold to parks, schools, and municipalities because children could lose their fingers from a broken weld.

Playworld Systems Inc., of Lewisburg, is aware of 13 incidents of broken welds and two children who had fingers amputated, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

The CPSC says the weld between the slide bed and sidewall can crack and separate and a child’s fingers can get caught in the space.

The slides have both single and double beds and were sold by Playworld Systems and independent distributors from November 2000 through October 2016 for between $1,500 through $4,000. They were manufactured by Horizon Industries, of Columbia.

The CPSC said consumers should immediately stop using the recalled slides and contact Playworld for a free replacement slide and free installation. A temporary barrier will be shipped to consumers prior to shipment of a replacement slide to prevent children from using the slide.

Playworld is contacting consumers who purchased the slides directly.
