In Myrtle Beach, one young cancer survivors says she wants to give back to the community.
Dozens of people braved the rain on Saturday to attend the Myrtle Beach Relay for Life at Broadway at the Beach.
The event featured face painting, rides, prizes, food and music.
There were so many vendors it seemed more like a sporting event; it even had the National Anthem sung by 11-year-old Mia Turner
“I did it last year and last year I was nervous, but this year I was kind of excited,” she said.
That should not be surprising because, Mia has faced far scarier things than singing in public.
“I’m a nine year cancer survivor and I finished the fight. So I want to help other people finish the fight,” said Mia.
Mia’s mom, Angel Turner, says when she found out her 18-month-old daughter was diagnosed with leukemia her life came to a standstill.
“Being your child and finding out they have what they consider a terminal illness, you don’t know what to think you cry, and you ask why, and you wait for answers,” said Angel Turner.
Angel says it was with the help of her family and community that she was able to move forward.
She says strangers donated things like food, money, and even diapers.
Now that her family is in the clear she wants to give back.
“Let them know that there is a chance for them and that we’re here to help them finish that,” said Angel.
Mia says she would not want to be anywhere else on a rainy Saturday besides the Relay for Life.
“This makes a difference for a lot of people and I want to do the same thing for other people that other people did for me,” she said.
The Myrtle Beach Relay for Life was able raise $74,000 dollars.
