MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) – City officials in Myrtle Beach are considering demolishing some blighted property in the southern part of downtown to clear the way for economic redevelopment.
The Sun News reported the city hopes to secure a $10 million loan pool for purchases and demolition.
The city would then sell the property to private companies for redevelopment.
City Manager John Pedersen said if banks provide the money, the city would tell owners they must improve their property or the city would take over and demolish the property.
Pedersen said each acquisition would go before City Council for approval. Purchases probably would not be made unless there was known interest in a piece of property.
Officials hope the redeveloped properties would attract young people to the city.
