MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – A crash involving a moped on Highway 501 near Carolina Forest Boulevard killed one person and sent another to the hospital Monday evening.

According to South Carolina Department of Transportation, the crash occurred at Carolina Forest Boulevard near West Perry Road at 6:11 p.m. Monday evening. SCDOT reports all southbound lanes were blocked for about two hours as emergency crews worked to clear the scene.

Corporal Sonny Collins with South Carolina Highway Patrol confirms that the crash involved a moped traveling south on Hwy 501 when a 2002 Lexus attempted to cross the highway, causing the moped to strike the side of the Lexus in front of Sparks Toyota. One person on the moped was killed in the crash and another occupant of the moped was transported to Grand Strand Regional Medical Center.

It is unclear at this time if the victim killed in the crash was the driver or the passenger of the moped, according to Cpl. Collins.

The Horry County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as 35-year-old Brandi Lee Haines from Myrtle Beach.

The driver of the Lexus, Sunny Irvin James, 32, is charged with failure to yield the right of way.
