FLORENCE (WBTW) – Crews from the Windy Hill Fire Department spent several hours making sure a fire at the WestRock plant did not spread.
Chief John DeLung tells News13 that firefighters were there for about four hours; from about 8:30 Monday night until 12:30 Tuesday morning.
DeLung says it took that long to make sure a pile of wood chips was completely doused.
He says part of a conveyor belt that brings the wood chips into the plant was also burning.
According to DeLung, his department has responded to wood chip fires at the WestRock plant before and it takes some time to make sure the chips are wet enough to stop the fire from spreading.
The WestRock plant is off State Rd S-21-1169 in Florence County.
News13 previously reported that the WestRock Company was going to spend $470 million to expand the plant. You can read that article here.
