ROWLAND, NC (WBTW) – Three people are dead and five injured in a crash that happened Sunday on I-95 near Rowland, according to North Carolina Highway Patrol.

Two of the deceased were from Massachusetts and one was from Florida. According to Sgt. S.B. Lewis, Thomas Holland, 44, of Grafton, Mass., was driving southbound when his car crossed the median and hit a northbound car. Debra Anderson, 60, of Oxford, Massachusetts, was a passenger in Holland’s car and also died in the crash. Gail Lee, 73, of Deland, Florida, was a passenger in a northbound vehicle and also is deceased.

Sgt. S.B. Lewis said the crash involved 4 cars and happened around 2:30 p.m. The passenger in that first car was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the vehicle.

The driver of the car that was struck head-on suffered serious injuries.

The crash caused two other cars to be involved, according to Lewis. From those cars, four others suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Highway Patrol cleared the crash at around 6 p.m.
