CHESTER, SC (AP) – A sheriff in South Carolina says he fired a deputy who was charged with driving under the influence in his patrol car while off duty.

State troopers say 25-year-old Chester County deputy Evan Robert Hawthorne crashed his patrol car at the Chester Park school complex around 11:15 p.m. Thursday.

Chester County Sheriff Max Dorsey told The Herald of Rock Hill he fired Hawthorne was soon as he heard about the arrest.

Dorsey says Hawthorne started road patrol for the sheriff’s office May 1. It was his second round of employment as a Chester County deputy.

Hawthorne was released from jail on his own recognizance and it wasn’t clear if he had an attorney.
