WASHINGTON (AP/WBTW/CNN NewSource) – Impeachment Article 1 has passed the House Wednesday night at around 8:30. Article 2 passed at around 8:45.
The U.S. House has impeached President Donald Trump on a charge he abused the power of his office to investigate a political rival ahead of the 2020 election.
Trump becomes the third president in U.S. history to be impeached. The House then approved a second charge, obstruction of Congress.
Democrats control the House, and the voting was mostly along party lines.
The charges against Trump will next go to the Republican-controlled Senate for a trial in January.
Trump, who says he’s done nothing wrong, would almost certainly be acquitted there.
Local lawmakers are reacting to the impeachment.
Republican Congressman Tom Rice said in a statement “I voted no on both articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump. This vote was the culmination of three years of corrupt effort by the Democratic Party and the federal bureaucracy to discredit and remove President Trump. He has been the target of an astounding barrage of lies, deceit, and corruption. Now that we can move past this partisan process that has overtaken the House of Representatives for the past few months, I look forward to getting back to work on bipartisan legislation to improve the lives of hardworking American citizens.”
