FLORENCE, SC (WBTW) – State authorities are investigating an officer-involved shooting in Florence, which happened late Friday morning.
Neither the suspect nor the officer was hurt, according to Capt. Mike Brandt with the Florence Police Department. The shooting happened on the 1100 block of Waxwing Drive during the
execution of search and arrest warrants.
The warrants are related to a recent shooting in the area along with reported drug activity, according to SLED.
During the execution of this warrant, shots were fired and three people were
detained, according to Capt. Mike Brandt. Per agency protocol, Chief Heidler requested that the State Law Enforcement Division investigate the shooting.
One officer has been placed on paid administrative leave and will be required to attend counseling, per agency protocol.
Upon the completion of the scene investigation by SLED, the Florence Police
Department continued the investigation of the drug activity. A search of the apartment yielded approximately 2,154 grams (4.74 pounds) of marijuana (Street valued at $14,000), 28 vials of marijuana wax, two handguns and $1,235, according to police.
This is an ongoing investigation and further information will be disclosed by SLED. The incident is the 19th officer-involved shooting in South Carolina in 2020 and the second this year involving the Florence Police Department.
No further information is available at this time regarding the shooting.
