UPDATE: 10:45 A.M. MONDAY

DARLINGTON, SC (WBTW) – Darlington County Coroner Todd Hardee has confirmed the death of an inmate at the W. Glenn Campbell Detention Center.

The death happened just after midnight Monday, according to Hardee.

“The inmate was in a medical observation area and not in the general population of the jail,” Hardee said. “The inmate had received medical treatment recently for an illness and was under the supervision of a medical doctor.”

The Darlington County Coroner’s Office and SLED are investigating.

An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday.

DARLINGTON, SC (WBTW) – An inmate was found dead inside a Darlington County jail cell.

Correctional officers found the person unresponsive inside a cell at the W. Glenn Campbell Detention Center Monday morning, according to the Darlington County Sheriff’s Office.

“It was determined the inmate was deceased,” said the sheriff’s office.

Darlington County Sheriff Tony Chavis has requested the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) to investigate.
