DILLON, SC (WBTW) – Governor Henry McMaster has suspended John Corey Jackson from the office of mayor in Dillon.
The announcement was made today and takes effect as soon as Jackson is sworn in, which happens today at 6:45 p.m. According to the executive order, the suspension will remain in effect until Jackson is formally acquitted or convicted.
A grand jury indicted Jackson on 11 charges of sexual exploitation of a minor, first degree.
According to SLED, the 23-year-old Jackson offered 10 teenage boys money in return for pictures of their genitals using Snapchat, arrest warrants claim. All of the teens were legally minors at the time of the incidents, which occurred between June 2017 and April 2019, SLED said.
Arrest warrants show Jackson offered $100 to $1,000 in exchange for the naked photographs of the teens. In some instances, Jackson sent a minor “sexually explicit nude female photographs,” in addition to money, according to the arrest warrants.
While some minors refused Jackson’s overtures, others complied by sending him pictures of exposed private parts they found on the internet, for which they were paid, SLED said in the arrest warrants.
Two of the minors sent pictures of themselves or acquaintances, arrest warrants show.
Jackson previously turned himself in at the Dillon County Detention Center on May 8, according to the center. Jackson was given a $50,000 bond. He posted bond and was released.
Dillon City Manager Glen Wagner responded to Gov. McMaster’s decision, saying there will still be a council meeting on Thursday night.
Wagner also said Jackson will get sworn in and will be suspended, but will still hold the position pending the outcome of his court case.
