HORRY COUNTY, SC (WBTW) – A 57-year-old man was shot to death in his home on Wednesday, according to the coroner’s office.

Charles Lawrence was shot several times at about 5:10 p.m. on Greenleaf Drive, the chief deputy coroner of Horry County reported on Thursday. He died on the scene and was pronounced dead at 8:45 p.m.

Taylor Ryan Strode, 26, of Conway, has been charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime in connection to the shooting, according to police. Strode appeared in court on Thursday and was sent to Circuit Court since one of the charges carries the possibility of death. He was ordered to have no contact with the victim’s family.

A standoff with the Strode lasted for about two hours on Wednesday, starting at about 5:30 p.m., on Greenleaf Drive. Strode eventually surrendered, police said.

News13 talked with Strode’s ex-girlfriend, Abi Perkins. She says Strode called her while the standoff was happening.

“He basically just called me to say he loved me, that he was sorry, to tell everybody else that he was sorry,” Perkins said. “This was obviously not the situation that he wanted to be in. He was just trying to say goodbye to everybody, make his amends while he could.”

The mobile command unit, SWAT team, and negotiators helped Horry County Police as officers tried to get the suspect out of the home.

“Because it was initially a shooting incident as the only call for service, we had to get in there to ascertain what exactly had happened,” said Mikayla Moskov, with the Horry County Police Department. “We were then able to surround the location and communicate with an individual who was on the exterior of that home. Ultimately, we were able to take that person into custody.”

The name of the person who died has not been released as of Thursday morning.
