Tucson, Ariz. – Coastal Carolina baseball had a trio of student-athletes in Cory Wood, Matt Eardensohn and Zach Biermann named to the 2019 Collegiate Baseball Preseason All-America teams, powered by Diamond Sports, on Monday, Dec. 17.
Wood was named to the second team, while both Eardensohn and Biermann earned spots on the third team.
Wood, a 2018 third-team Collegiate Baseball All-American and a first-team All-Sun Belt selection at second base last year as a sophomore, hit .296 with a triple, 19 doubles, and 22 RBIs at the top of the Coastal order. He ranked fourth on the team with 66 base hits, was second on the team with 61 runs scored and second on the team with 17 stolen bases (17-of-24). Wood drew 52 walks on the season, second most on the team and the 18th-most nationally, and posted a team-high 21 multi-hit games on the year. He also registered a team-high on-base streak of 38-straight games in 2018.
Named to the second-team All-Sun Belt team, Eardensohn earned a spot alongside Biermann on the Collegiate Baseball preseason third-team. Tabbed the Sun Belt Pitcher of the Week on April 17 of last season, the senior appeared in 20 games on the mound for CCU, making one start last year as a junior where he posted a perfect 7-0 record with a 2.18 ERA and a team-high six saves. His seven wins were tied for the team lead, while his 2.18 ERA was a team-best for the Coastal pitching staff in 2018.
Part of three shutouts on the season for the Chants – versus No. 30 Texas State (March 23) and twice against Little Rock (May 11 and May 13) – the right-handed hurler struck out 51 batters compared to just 14 walks over 57.2 innings, a 3.6-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio on the season. He held opponents to a .188 batting average on the year and fanned a season-high five batters three times – versus Illinois (Feb. 23), at Troy (April 14) and versus South Alabama (May 24) in the Sun Belt Championship Tournament.
A 2018 American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) third-team All-American selection, Biermann will look to build on his lone season for the Chanticleers in which he was also named to the ABCA All-Atlantic Region first team, first-team All-Sun Belt, the Sun Belt Tournament Most Outstanding Player and earned spots on both the NCAA Conway Regional and Sun Belt Championship all-tournament teams.
Last season, Biermann hit .302 with 13 home runs, 14 doubles, 57 runs scored and 57 RBIs. He closed out the season batting .355 (22-for-62) with 19 runs, 26 RBIs, 13 walks and five home runs while collecting a hit in 13 of his final 17 games.
Biermann was 1-for-4 in the Sun Belt Tournament championship game with three RBIs by way of a two-run double and a sacrifice fly. In the four games in leading CCU to the conference championship title, Biermann had a tournament-best 12 RBIs (including a career-high five RBIs in the quarterfinal game versus South Alabama) while adding six runs scored.
Then in the NCAA Conway Regional, Biermann batted .462 (6-for-13) in three games with six RBIs, six runs scored and a home run. In CCU’s final game of the season versus UConn, he went 3-for-4 with four RBIs and three runs scored in the 6-5 loss.
The Chanticleers open up the 2019 season with the Britton Resorts Invitational on Feb. 15-17 at Springs Brooks Stadium in Conway, S.C. The opening-weekend tournament will consist of host CCU, Maryland, VCU and Campbell.
The 2019 baseball schedule includes three home tournaments, five Sun Belt Conference home weekend series and a total of 29 home games at Springs Brooks Stadium this season.
