Boone, N.C. (WBTW) – Naheria Hamilton had 22 points and 13 rebounds, marking a career high in scoring and her fourth double-double of the season, but it was not enough to defeat Appalachian State as Madi Story scored 26 points to lead the Mountaineers to a 67-53 win over the Chants Saturday afternoon at the Holmes Center.
Coastal (8-8, 0-5 SBC) led 44-43 at the end of the third quarter, but Story hit a trio of 3-pointers early in the fourth to swing the lead back to App State (9-7, 3-2). The Mountaineers held onto that lead for the remainder of the game, scoring 11 unanswered points to close out the final four minutes of the contest.
Hamilton’s 22 points came on 9-19 from the field and 4-4 at the free-throw line, and the junior center added three blocks for her seventh multi-block game of the season.
DJ Williams reached double-digits in points for the eighth consecutive game, following Hamilton with 15 points.
In addition to Story’s 26 points, App State received 14 points from Bayley Plummer and 11 from Ashley Polacek. Plummer also led all players with 17 rebounds, and Polacek had a game high of eight assists.
Each team shot below 40 percent for the game, though App held a 45-35 advantage in rebounds. That included 15 offensive rebounds that led to 17 second-chance points for the Mountaineers.
Coastal captured a 20-14 lead in the first quarter after having a successful shooting period. The Chants hit nine of their 16 first-quarter attempts, including Torrie Cash scoring seven points on 3-3 from the field.
Coastal’s lead was quickly erased in the second quarter as App State went on a 13-2 run during the first half of the frame. With App leading by six points, the Chants continually made their way to the free-throw line and were able to knock down all eight of their attempts at the stripe. Coastal’s 8-8 at the line balanced its 2-13 shooting from the field, and the first half ended with App holding a narrow 34-32 lead.
The third quarter was a low-scoring period for both teams. Coastal outscored App 12-9 over the 10 minutes, and received eight of its 12 points consecutively over a three-minute span. That streak gave the Chants a 44-40 lead, which was then trimmed to a one-point advantage following a Polacek 3-pointer to close the quarter’s scoring. Hamilton scored eight of her points in the third quarter, and had Coastal’s first three baskets in the period.
With its three-game road trip concluded, Coastal will make its first home appearance since the beginning of January. The Chants welcome Little Rock (Jan. 24) and Arkansas State (Jan. 26) to the HTC Center this week.
