Buies Creek, N.C. – Just four days removed and 142 miles away from its home-opening blowout win over UAB on Saturday night at Brooks Stadium, the Coastal Carolina football team scored the final 48 points of the game to pull away for a 58-21 road win on Wednesday afternoon at Barker-Lane Stadium in Buies Creek, N.C.

With the game being moved up four days and relocated due to Hurricane Florence, the Chants scored a new FBS-era 58 points, besting last week’s 47-point outing in the win over UAB. The 58 points is also the most points by CCU since scoring 58 points in a loss at Charleston Southern on Oct. 1, 2016.

The Chants improved to 2-1 on the season with the win and have now won four of its last five games, including two-straight victories over the last five days. The loss drops Campbell to 2-1 on the year.

The CCU defense allowed three scores and 217 yards to the Campbell offense over the first three possessions, but then locked down to force the Camels into six-straight punts, a blocked field goal and only 89 total yards over their final seven possessions.

Coastal racked up 574 yards of total offense, including 333 yards on the ground and 241 yards through the air.

Quarterbacks Kilton Anderson (10-14-1, 202 yards, 3 TD), Bryce Carpenter (2-2-0, 25 yards, TD) and Chance Thrasher (1-1-0, 14 yards) combined to complete 76.5 percent of their pass attempts for 241 yards and four touchdowns, highlighted by Anderson’s three TD passes.

Anderson, who accounted for three touchdowns for the second-straight game, completed his first eight pass attempts in the first half, which gave him 16-consecutive pass completions in a row after successfully completing his final eight pass attempts in the second half of the home-opening win over UAB last Saturday.

The Chant quarterbacks completed 13 passes to eight different receivers led by senior wideout Malcolm Williams’ team-high four catches for 75 yards and two scores. However, the big play of the day in the air came on an 81-yard touchdown pass and catch from Anderson to Ky’Jon Tyler in the second quarter. The 81-yard play is tied for the fifth-longest pass reception in Coastal Carolina history and is also tied for the 16th-longest scoring play in CCU history.

On the ground, the trio of Anderson (5 carries, 67 yards), Torrance Marable (8 carries, 64 yards, 2 TD) and Marcus Outlow (14 carries, 63 yards, TD) all rushed for over 60 yards for the game, and along with a late score from running backBaden Pinson (3 carries, 25 yards, TD), combined for four scores on the ground.

The defense was led by a quintet of defenders with six tackles apiece from Michael MakinsSilas Kelly, Sterling JohnsonTarron Jackson and Jonathan Clayton, while defensive lineman Jeffrey Gunter totaled five stops, 1.0 sack, 3.0 tackles for loss and forced a fumble in the win.

Campbell totaled 306 yards of offense for the game, but was held to just 88 yards on the ground. Quarterback Daniel Smith was 16-for-34 for 218 yards, a touchdown and an interception, and was bottled up for a mere 15 rushing yards for the game.

For the third-straight game, the Chanticleers found themselves down after the opening drive, as the Fighting Camels went 80 yards on just 10 plays to take a 7-0 lead on an 18-yard touchdown pass from Smith to Caleb Snead to start the contest.

Coastal answered with seven points of its own on their first drive of the game, as Anderson connected with Williams across the middle for a 12-yard touchdown pass to tie the game up at 7-7 with 7:08 to go in the first quarter.

The back-and-forth scoring affair continued with the Camels retaking the lead in the first quarter on a Smith 14-yard touchdown scramble, before CCU freshman kickerMassimo Biscardi connected on a 34-yard field goal to put the Chants down four at 14-10 early in the second quarter.

Campbell again moved down the field on its ensuing drive, capping off the series with a one-yard touchdown plunge by Rocky Reid to push its lead to double digits at 21-10 with 10:41 to go before the halftime break.

On CCU’s next offensive possession, the Chants followed a delay game of penalty with an 81-yard touchdown pass from Anderson to Tyler to cut the Campbell lead to four at 21-17.

The score jump-started the Chants’ offense, as the visitors added a 38-yard touchdown reception from Williams before the half to take a 24-21 lead into the break.

In the opening possession of the second-half, the Chants drove 75 yards on nine plays to push its lead to double digits at 31-21 on a one-yard touchdown dive by Marable with 10:38 to play in the third quarter.

After a huge defensive stop, in which the defense picked up a sack by Gunter to force the Camels to punt for the third-straight series, the Coastal Carolina offense padded its lead on just four plays highlighted by a 30-yard touchdown run by Marable to put the Chants in front big at 38-21.

Over the final 22 minutes of the game, the Chants’ defense forced three punts and blocked a field goal, this time by way of Johnson, while the offense picked up a touchdown pass from Chandler to Jaivon Heiligh – a 21-yard score for the high school teammates, a three-yard touchdown run from Outlow and a six-yard score by Pinson as the clock struck 0:00 to put the final score at 58-21.

Coastal Carolina heads to Florida to ride out Hurricane Florence as the campus has been closed and the South Carolina coast has been evacuated. The Chants open up Sun Belt Conference play at Louisiana on Saturday, Sept. 22, at 7 p.m. ET/6 p.m. CT.
