CONWAY – Coastal Carolina shortstop Seth Lancaster and designated hitter Zach Biermann were voted to the 2018 American Baseball Coaches Association All-American Team, it was announced today.

Lancaster, a second team pick, and Biermann, a third team pick, become the fifth and sixth Chanticleers to be named ABCA All-Americans, joining Anthony Meo (2010, 3rd team), Tommy La Stella (2011, 2nd team), Connor Owings (2016, 1st team) and G.K. Young (2016, 1st team). Also making the 2018 ABCA All-American team were fellow Sun Belt players Joey Denison (Troy, 2nd team) and Colten Schmidt (Louisiana, 3rd team).

Lancaster (Hanahan, S.C.) has been selected All-American by three entities this season, was first team All-Sun Belt and named to the Sun Belt All-Tournament Team (when he tied Woodall with a league-record 10 runs scored). He batted .305 in his senior season and led the team in runs (81), home runs (20), walks (63), slugging percentage (.646), on base percentage (.454) and stolen bases (23) while ranking second in hits (69), doubles (17) and RBI (57).

Lancaster is the only player in the NCAA to rank among the top 20 in walks (third with 63), home runs (sixth with 20) and runs scored (second with 81). He was also the only player to rank among the league’s top 10 in the following nine categories:  first in home runs, first in walks, first in total bases, second in runs, second in slugging, third in RBI, fifth in stolen bases, sixth in on base percentage and eighth in doubles.

Lancaster saved his best for the last. Over the last nine games of his career, he may have been the hottest hitter in the NCAA or at least the most productive as he batted .405 (15-for-37) with 18 runs scored, 16 RBI, seven home runs and 12 walks.

Biermann (West Bend, Wis.) garners his first All-American honor and continues to add to his impressive first-year resume with Coastal as he was additionally voted first team All-Sun Belt, Sun Belt Tournament Most Outstanding Player, Sun Belt All-Tournament and NCAA Conway Regional All-Tournament. The junior batted .302 with 14 doubles, 13 home runs, 57 runs scored and 57 RBI.

At the Sun Belt Tournament, he as 1-for-4 in the championship game with three RBI (two-run double and a sacrifice fly). For the four games in leading CCU to the Championship, Biermann had a tournament-best 12 RBI (including a career-high five RBI in the quarterfinal game versus South Alabama) while adding six runs scored. He hit for the cycle over the course of the tourney, collecting two singles, two doubles, a triple and a home run. Then in the NCAA Conway Regional, Biermann batted .462 (6-for-13) in three games with six RBI, six runs scored and a home run. In CCU’s final game versus UConn, he was 3-for-4 with four RBI in the 6-5 loss while he scored three runs and drove in one in the 13-6 loss to Washington.

After going 0-for-6 in the ULM finale to snap a streak of reaching base safely (hit/walk/hit by pitch) at 29 games, Biermann was batting .280. After that (last 17 games), he batted .355 (22-for-62) with 19 runs, 26 RBI, 13 walks and five home runs while collecting a hit in 13 of those final 17 games.
