KNOXVILLE (WATE/AP) – If you own a Whirlpool, Kenmore or Maytag front-loading washing machine manufactured between 2001 and 2010, you may be eligible for up to $500 in cash or a voucher toward a new washer as part of a class action lawsuit.
Attorneys for customers alleged the washers had “serious design defects” that can cause mold and mildew and companies failed to warn consumers. Consumers said that the machines did not clean themselves properly, while the companies said only a small number of machines had problems.
“From the beginning we have had mold issues with the machine,” said Howard of Washington Crossing, Pa., in a complaint to ConsumerAffairs about his Whirlpool Duet. “The entire house fills with the smell of rotten eggs everytime we use it.”
A court has not approved a settlement, but WRTV reports a hearing is scheduled for September 7 in U.S. District Court in Cleveland, Ohio. In order to get the money, owners of the washer must submit a claim by October 11, 2016.More:Information on submitting a claim
Depending on the documentation you can provide as a customer, you can receive a $50 cash payment, a 5% or 20% rebate toward the purchase of a new washing machine or dryer, or up to $500 in reimbursement for out-of-pocket expenses for repairs or replacement due to a mold or odor problem.
Whirlpool said in a statement that it would keep vigorously defending against the lawsuits, which it called an “attack” on American manufacturing. “The facts remain unchanged: the vast majority of class members have not been harmed and never will be,” it said.
Sears said in a statement that it disagreed with the decision and that an “overwhelming majority” of owners of its Kenmore front-loading washers were pleased with them.
