BEAUFORT, N.C. — A North Carolina couple were indicted on murder charges after a man overdosed on heroin they sold him nearly two years ago, officials say.
A Carteret County Grand Jury indicted Michael Becker, 51, and April Guthrie, 33, earlier this week in the death of Kendal Walbert.
Walbert, 23, of Morehead City died in mid-August 2014 after a heroin overdose, officials say.
Becker and Guthrie, of Newport, were indicted on one count each of second degree murder, among other drug-related charges.
The incident happened at a home at 200 Lydia Drive in Newport, according to Jacksonville Daily News.
Guthrie’s first appearance in court is scheduled for July 18. Becker was scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday.
CBS North Carolina Investigates pulled data from 2010 to 2014 and found the number of people dying just from heroin use has jumped up 584 percent.
In 2014, more than 250 people died of a heroin overdose in North Carolina, according to North Carolina Public Health.— WNCT contributed to this report
